Microscope Cleaning Guide for Lenses and Stage

Diagnose dirt before touching optics
Clean a microscope only through its manufacturer and laboratory procedure. First determine whether the problem follows the slide, stays in the field, changes with objective rotation, or appears only to one viewer. Switch off and unplug equipment when the approved procedure requires it. Allow hot components to cool. Do not open housings, defeat interlocks, or repair electrical parts.
Use materials made for optical surfaces
Use fresh approved lens paper and only the cleaning solution specified for that lens and microscope. Never use facial tissue, paper towel, cotton clothing, or fingers on optical glass; they can leave fibers, oils, or scratches. Household cleaners and unapproved solvents may damage coatings, adhesives, plastics, or painted finishes.
Keep cleaning fluid controlled. Apply it as directed, often to the cleaning material rather than flooding the lens. Prevent liquid from entering the objective, eyepiece, stage controls, illuminator, or electrical parts.
Clean from the least contaminated area
Follow the lab's order and wiping motion, using a fresh area of lens paper for each pass. Inspect under suitable light without touching the glass. Stop when the surface is clean because repeated polishing can abrade or contaminate the coating.
If debris does not move, report it. A scratch, internal dust, fungus, delamination, or damaged cement cannot be solved by stronger rubbing.
Handle immersion oil separately

Use the approved disposal route for oily paper and cleaning materials. Read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the specific cleaning product and follow its requirements for ventilation, protective equipment, exposure response, and disposal together with laboratory procedure.
Clean the stage without moving contamination
Remove slides and dispose of or store them first. Clean the stage and slide holder with materials approved for those surfaces. Specimen spills require the biological or chemical decontamination method for that material, not a generic lens-cleaning routine.

Never pick broken glass up by hand. Use the designated tools and sharps or broken-glass container.
Check eyepieces and external surfaces
Remove eyepieces only if the manual and lab procedure allow it. Cover openings so dust cannot enter. Clean external grips, base, and cord through the approved method without wetting electrical areas.
If several users share the instrument, follow the institution's hygiene procedure. Do not spray disinfectant directly onto optics or controls unless explicitly approved for that model.
Store the microscope reset
Return the lowest-power objective, stage, illumination, cord, cover, and carrying position to the laboratory standard. Keep the storage area dry and protected as specified. Document recurring dirt or damage so the next user does not solve the same mystery from zero.
A good cleaning session is minimal and traceable: identify the surface, use approved material, avoid flooding, stop before damage, and escalate anything internal or persistent.
